How to Pack a Storage Unit: 12 Tips to Fit More and Protect Your Belongings
Pack smarter, fit more and find things faster
A well-packed storage unit holds more, keeps your things in better shape and makes it much easier to find what you need later. Whether you are storing a few boxes or a whole household, these tips will help you get the most out of your space.
Before you pack
1. Choose the right size. Make a quick list of what you plan to store. Our storage size guide explains what fits in each unit size, from small 5x5 units to large 10x30 units.
2. Use boxes of the same size. Uniform boxes stack more neatly and safely than a mix of sizes. Use small boxes for heavy items like books and larger boxes for light items like linens.
3. Use plastic bins for anything important. Bins with tight lids protect better against dust, pests and humidity than cardboard.
4. Label every box on more than one side. Write what is inside and which room it came from, so you can read the label no matter how the box is stacked.
5. Make an inventory. A simple list or a few photos of what you stored will save you time later.
Packing the unit
6. Get things off the floor. Lay down pallets or plastic sheeting before you load, especially in drive-up units.
7. Put heavy items on the bottom. Stack the heaviest boxes first and lighter boxes on top to avoid crushed boxes and tipping stacks.
8. Use the height of the unit. Stack boxes high and use sturdy shelving to make use of vertical space.
9. Leave a walkway. Leave a path down the middle or along one side so you can reach items in the back without unloading everything.
10. Put things you need often near the door. Seasonal items, tools and anything you will pick up soon should go in front.
11. Take furniture apart when you can. Remove table legs and bed frames, keep the hardware in labeled bags taped to the piece, and stand sofas on end if they are sturdy enough.
12. Cover furniture and mattresses. Use moving blankets or plastic covers to keep off dust, and avoid wrapping wood furniture in plastic so tightly that moisture is trapped.
What not to store
For safety, do not store food, perishables, flammable liquids, fuel, chemicals or anything alive. If you are not sure about an item, ask before you move it in.
